Autonomic Nervous System Test (ANS)
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) testing is a powerful diagnostic tool that can assess the communication from the brain to various organs, such as the heart and vascular system, lungs, kidneys, stomach, liver, intestines, and digestive system. These tests are performed to help establish the health of a person’s autonomic nervous system. The results will then give the doctor insight for recommendations on how to better maintain autonomic balance, which can reduce the complications of chronic disease and lower the risk of premature death.
The ANS is a simple, painless test that lasts anywhere from 7 – 15 minutes. During these few minutes, patients perform a series of actions while the ANS system monitors the body’s response. The system looks at changes in heart rate and blood pressure to calculate a response, as well as autonomic balance in both branches of the autonomic nervous system – the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.
Benefits of Autonomic Nervous System Testing
ANS testing can be an effective tool for diagnosing and treating a variety of illnesses, including hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and all types of autonomic dysfunctions. It can also provide valuable insight into how to better maintain overall health by addressing issues such as fatigue and stress. Furthermore, the test results can provide doctors with data to help them identify and target specific areas of the patient’s autonomic nervous system that may be out of balance.
At Wellness Solutions, we are committed to providing our patients with comprehensive care that seeks to improve their overall health and quality of life. Our ANS testing is a safe, non-invasive procedure that gives physicians insight into a patient’s autonomic balance and can provide insight into how to better manage chronic illnesses.

What You Should Do Before Your Autonomic Nervous System Test
Before undergoing an ANS test, it is important to discuss with your doctor any medications and supplements you are taking that could affect the results. Additionally, patients should avoid eating or drinking anything two hours before the test to ensure accurate results. Finally, it is important for those who suffer from cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension to inform their doctor before taking the ANS test.

Ankle-Brachial Index Test (ABI)
The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) test is a quick, noninvasive way to check your risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD). Peripheral artery disease is a condition in which the arteries in your legs or arms are narrowed or blocked. Those who suffer from peripheral artery disease are at an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, poor circulation, and leg pain.
Having an ABI test is painless and similar to getting your blood pressure taken during a routine visit to your doctor. The test is simply lying on a table on your back as a technician measures your blood pressure in both your arms and legs using a special inflatable cuff. As the technician measures the blood pressure in the two arteries in both of your ankles, the doctor will press a hand-held Doppler ultrasound device on your skin. The Doppler device will use sound waves to produce images and let them hear your pulse in your ankle arteries after the cuff is deflated. The procedure for performing an ankle-brachial index test may vary slightly, based on your doctor’s preference.
The results of the ABI test are a comparison of your blood pressure measured at your ankles with your blood pressure measured at your arms. The result, for instance, could show a low ankle-brachial index number which indicates a narrowing or blockage of the arteries in your legs, increasing your risk of circulatory problems, and possibly causing heart disease or stroke.
Benefits of Ankle-Brachial Index Testing
Ankle-brachial index testing can help diagnose peripheral artery disease, helping to detect possible blockages in the arteries of both your arms and legs. If a person is at risk for or has been diagnosed with PAD, having an ABI test can give doctors an insight into how severe it is. An ABI result that falls within the normal range means that there’s no blockage in the arteries and no need for additional treatment. However, if an ABI result is high, then further testing may be needed to understand what’s causing the blockage.
At Wellness Solutions, we believe in providing our patients with comprehensive care that takes into account their overall health and well-being. Our ABI test is a safe, non-invasive procedure that can provide valuable insight into the circulatory system and help to diagnose any potential issues of concern. If you’re looking for a way to assess your risk of PAD or better understand existing circulatory issues, then an ABI test may be just what you need.
Help diagnose peripheral artery disease
Detect possible blockages in the arteries
Insight into how severe PAD diagnosis is
Provide valuable insight into the circulatory system
What You Should Do Before Your Ankle-Brachial Index Test
Before taking an ABI test, you should wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing and remove any jewelry from your legs or arms. Patients should also avoid wearing socks with bumps or ridges as this can interfere with getting accurate readings during the test. Additionally, patients should not smoke before the test, as smoking can lead to false results in the reading.
