Sports Physicals

Is it time for another sport season or are you trying your hand at something new? Kids and teens are often required to have sports physicals before they play for a school or in summer leagues, and it is a good idea for adults to have one as well before they get active in athletics. Wellness Solutions is more than happy to be your trusted provider when booking your next sports physical!

What’s the Difference Between a Sports Physical and a Regular Physical?

During a sports physical, the doctor will look at your body as it relates to sports and athletics to see whether you’re healthy enough to safely participate. The doctor will go over your vitals, general health, and medical history just like a regular checkup, but he or she will focus on what propels your body during physical activity: your heart, lungs, bones, and joints.

After the sports physical, the doctor may be able to tell you whether you have any conditions you were not aware of or whether there are certain injuries you are more likely to sustain. In addition, he or she can give you information on how to safely play sports with any injuries you already have. For instance, if you have a bad knee but want to play soccer, the doctor might recommend a certain knee brace or suggest you play a certain position to protect your knee.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Trigger-point injections work especially well when combined with other pain-management therapies like massage therapy and physical therapy. Trigger points are frequently caused by stress, poor ergonomics, or inactivity, and this injection therapy can provide immediate and ongoing pain relief in the targeted area while other treatments address the underlying cause.

What To Expect During A Sports Physical

A routine physical examination during a sports physical includes vital sign checks, and vision and hearing screenings. We also look for joint and muscle problems and ask general questions regarding your family’s medical history.

If during the examination we notice any problem, we may need to schedule a follow-up for one of our other sports medicine treatments. Also, we’ll check for hernias (in men) during the physical. If a female patient’s sports physical coincides with their annual wellness check, we may recommend a pelvic exam based on other health factors, but it’s not performed during the sports physical.
